In 1929, Mr. Louis Downs started a small pressing shop behind Ralph Cornwell’s Barber Shop in Olde Town Conyers. He then moved to 913 Commercial Street. Lewis and his wife Mae ran the Cleaners for 34 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Downs sold the business to Mr. Jim Shipp in 1962. The name was changed to Dry Cleaners & Laundry and the logo of a Little Puritan girl with the name of “Purity Downs” was added. In 1969, the business moved to its present location at 1112 West Ave.
In 1970, the plant was the feature article for its design in the Trade Magazine Dry Cleaning World. Since then, Dry Cleaners & Laundry has continued to be at the forefront in innovation and technology. For 38 years, Jim Shipp ran this company and served the community as a civic leader.
In 2000, our company was sold to its present owner, Jim’s son David Shipp. There are now three stores and three route vans to service the area. We have 21 employees and 2 seamstresses to meet the cleaning and clothing needs in Rockdale and Newton Counties.
